typographic experiment - 'citytale' journeys
In 2008, I undertook a rather experimental typographical exercise as part of my studies. The gist was to create a set of 20 double-sided cards (20cm by 15cm each), abstractly representing a journey/experience one has in our Bastard Metropolis, Sydney. I opted to Typographically interpret the travels of commuters on Sydney’s widely-detested CityRail transport network. My goal was to capture conversations, sights, sounds, feelings and the overall experience of each journey. One thing I learned is that the seats on these trains get uncomfortable after 30 minutes, painful after 60, unbearable after 90, and ridiculous after 120+. I clocked up some serious in-carriage hours during the few weeks I was actively travelling, recording, and transcribing and winced upon planting my behind on anything for weeks. These are the results. The two images directly below show all cards as they fit together. Below that, a few closer views.
